I have been thinking about The Sea Ranch ever since I last went.
It’s that kind of unforgettable place. A hundred miles north of San Francisco, The Sea Ranch Lodge sits right at the edge of the coast, weathered timber against miles of bluff, with the Pacific filling every window.
If you are dreaming about an elopement (or even a proposal or engagement) that feels like a getaway and a wedding in one, this guide covers everything you need to plan it.
Why The Sea Ranch Lodge
The Sea Ranch was designed around a single idea: living lightly on the land. The buildings sit low in the landscape, built from wood that weathers to the color of the headlands. The lodge was fully renovated a few years ago, and its 17 guest rooms carry that original mid-century spirit with design-forward elements.
For an elopement, the practical beauty is that everything lives in one place. You can get ready in your room, say I do on the bluff, sit down to dinner overlooking the water, and wake up the next morning to coffee by the ocean. No driving between locations, no logistics pulling you out of the day.
Packages at a Glance
The lodge offers dedicated elopement packages for 2 to 20 guests. At the time of writing, they range from about $2,000 to $7,000 depending on your date and guest count, and they generally run Sunday through Friday, with Saturdays reserved for larger weddings.

Staying at The Sea Ranch Lodge
This is the fun part (and small tip, if you stay there, you could still do your own photo shoot at Sea Ranch without booking a package!). Staying over means you have all the time in the world to enjoy the setting. The morning after might be my favorite argument for eloping here. Coffee from the café, a walk on the Bluff Top Trail, sea lions and, in season, gray whales moving past the point. The Sea Ranch Chapel, a tiny sculptural landmark, is a few minutes up the road and worth a stop. Gualala and Point Arena make an easy day of wandering if you stretch the trip into a weekend.
Your elopement becomes the start of a honeymoon rather than an event you drive home from. I will add though that the restaurant food is overpriced for the quality (particularly for dinner – personal opinion!) but I guess you are paying for the view. There are plenty of cute restaurants closeby for a lovely meal. You could also bring your own picnic, though it can get quite windy and cold in the evening.
Planning for the light
This is where I put my photographer hat on. Coastal light rewards a little planning:
Aim for late afternoon. The fog is most likely to have lifted, and you land close to golden hour for portraits on the bluff. A ceremony around 4 or 5pm, a long unhurried walk along the headlands as the light turns gold, then dinner as the sun drops into the Pacific.
Respect the wind. It is part of the place, and it makes for gorgeous movement in a veil or a dress, but plan hair and attire with it in mind. Bring layers you love. A coat or wrap will end up in your photos, so make it one you want to remember.
