I used to live in Hong Kong.
So, when I moved to the Bay Area, Chinatown became my immediate refuge. The dense streets packed with people and produce, the vibrant conversations in Cantonese, and the steam rising from dim sum dishes felt like home.
This connection drives my entire approach to photographing couples in Chinatown, a living, layered place full of cinematic texture. We use that energy to create images that feel lived in, a little retro, and most of all, fun.
Here are my favorite spots for a couple or engagement session and why I recommend them.
1. Dim Sum at Grant Place
I love this spot because it’s no frills, just great food. Sharing a meal is also the perfect way to help you feel at ease in front of the camera, and we get to capture sweet candid moments full of laughter and romance.
2. Stockton Bakery
If you prefer a quick street snack over a sit-down meal, Stockton Bakery is the place to go. They are known for their fresh dan tat. These egg tarts are pretty much the best you can find (in my humble opinion) and the line is never too long. The bakery is right on bustling Stockton Street, which brings an unpredictable element of street photography to your session.
3. Lipo Lounge
For those who want a moodier, cinematic aesthetic, I recommend Lipo Lounge. It is famous for its Chinese Mai Tais, but the real draw is the lighting. The interior is dark with strong neon accents, creating a look that feels very Wong Kar-Wai. It is distinct from the outdoor street shots and adds a cool, retro bar vibe to your gallery. Note that it can get busy, so we usually aim for off-peak hours to get the best booth seats.
4. Ross Alley
Ross Alley offers a lot of visual variety in a short distance. It is home to the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory and features murals that change periodically. The walls here have a gritty, industrial texture that contrasts well with formal outfits.
5. Waverly Place
An iconic street widely known as “The Street of Painted Balconies”, Waverly Place is visually distinct because of the colorful, ornate architecture on the upper levels of the buildings. It is generally wider and quieter than the main avenues, making it easier to dance and run in the road for some fun candids.
6. Grant Avenue
This is the most recognizable spot for San Francisco Chinatown engagement photos, but timing is key. The red lanterns strung across the street look best from blue hour, the window just after sunset when the sky is deep blue and the lights glow. While it attracts tourists, I know the specific cross-streets where we can find a clean composition. Beyond the iconic street view, the avenue is lined with fascinating shops. Weaving in and out of them adds a playful, interactive layer to the session. Overall, this street is the best option if you want that classic Chinatown backdrop, especially if shooting on film.
