If you are looking for a location that feels like a European getaway without leaving the Bay Area, Filoli Historic House & Garden is unmatched. Having photographed here many times, I have explored every corner of this estate but it never gets old. The visual range is simply fun, with the poise of the beautiful buildings and the whimsy of the ever-changing gardens all in one. However, Filoli is a labyrinth and it can be overwhelming if you don’t have a plan.
Here are my tips for making the most of your time at this Woodside gem.
1. Pick Your Season
Filoli is stunning year-round, so you can’t go wrong. Pick the season that matches what you love most (and check out their What’s Blooming calendar).
- Spring (Feb–April): Think endless tulips, daffodils, and cherry blossoms. Bloom-inspired pastel-tones and gardens that are full of life!
- Summer (May–Aug): Peak season for the rose garden. Deep, lush greens create a moody, romantic backdrop. It can get windy, but that can be a vibe too.
- Autumn (Sept–Nov): Ideal for a cozy, rustic aesthetic with warm textures and golden hues. You may get a glimpse of their spooky Halloween wonderland.
- Winter (Dec–Jan): The crowds are few, letting the architecture and evergreen structure shine. Perfect for a quiet, elegant vibe with soft light and for anyone who loves the enchanting magic of Christmas. I have never seen so many incredible Christmas trees in one place!
2. Time of Day
Couples often ask if we need to shoot on a weekday when it is less busy. The answer is no. The estate is massive so, even on a weekend, we can easily find quiet, private corners for your photos. That said, if you truly want to avoid people, aiming for opening hour or the final hour before closing is your best bet to beat the rush.
3. Hidden Gems
While the whole of Filoli is beautiful, I have a few favorite spots that I love taking my couples to.
- The Walled Garden: The pond and terraced landscape create a frame that feels like something right out of a Jane Austen novel.
- Woodland Court: Most people walk right past this old tennis court. The aged textures and towering trees create a nostalgic, slightly retro vibe, especially during fall and on film.
- The Hydrangeas: You won’t find this spot on the map! It’s a quiet little nook with a forest fairy feel. Best in autumn but I love that they stay in bloom all the way into winter.
- Inside the House: The gardens are beautiful but the house offers moody, dramatic window light and grand hallways that give your session a completely unique, cinematic feel.
4. Come prepared
Here is my practical checklist to save you stress:
- Wristbands: Don’t wear the admission band! You are permitted to wrap it around your bag to keep it from ruining your outfit.
- Shoes: Sharp heels sink in the grass. Bring a pair of slides or flats for walking between locations.
- No Outside Florals: Personal bouquets are prohibited to protect the ecosystem. If you want flowers, we can grab seasonal blooms from the garden shop upon arrival.
- Jackets: The valley wind picks up fast. Bring jackets that match your outfits so you stay warm if needed.
- Explore: Don’t forget to plan for wandering time before or after your shoot – there is usually something festive going on in the historic house or up the trails for you to see!
5. Leverage My Membership
Finally, let me handle the logistics. As an annual member at Filoli, I have guest privileges that allow me to cover one of your admission tickets, which means I will do the booking. It’s a small way to streamline your arrival so we can walk right in and focus on creating beautiful images.
